I'm practicing that line regularly, waiting for the day I have to appear before the Popcorn Judge in Concession Court.

OK, back to reality. Three weeks ago, a dozen or so customers commented across the counter about the recent NBC news story about how evil movie theater popcorn was. They didn't have the time to hear our position on the way into a movie, but I assured each of them- maybe you- that the popcorn story would be forthcoming. Read on.

A few years ago, having been popping in coconut oil since we bought the theater, we reluctantly gave into pressure from brainwashed customers (thanks to mass media promotion of the GMO canola health benefits) and tried canola oil to pop our corn in. Coincidentally (?) the first weekend that we were using it, we hosted a film event (The Future of Food), which included several nutritionist speakers on healthy eating and organic choices. We asked them their opinion about which choice was best- canola or coconut oil. I am thrifty and don't throw much away, but I discarded the rest of the 50 pound pail of canola oil to switch back to coconut oil after they rendered their opinion! The quote I recall from one of them was: "Canola oil is just a molecule away from being a lubricant". On the other hand, there are mounds and mounds of information that tout the healthy, cholesterol reducing effects of coconut oil.* Legitimate researchers say that these benefits of coconut oil can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid: healthy hair & skin, stress relief, maintaining cholesterol levels, weight loss, increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism, relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and cancer, dental care, and bone strength... and they go on and on. Last week I spoke with a lady that eats a spoonful of coconut oil each day- she also has a nutrition background. For the record, our coconut oil is not hydrogenated- a process that changes the coconut oil for worse.

So today, we continue to cook our popcorn in coconut oil, we offer a real dairy product called butter to drizzle flavor on that popcorn, and encourage you to confidently choose to take part in the movie theater ritual of popcorn when you come in. There's nothing like it! You're making a good decision to choose natural foods and fats, which are critical components of our diet.

If you catch me at the concession stand, I'd be happy to make your popcorn 'just perfect' for you- like my mom would have it. That recipe for perfect popcorn is easy- hot fresh popcorn, drizzle a small amount of butter at the halfway point, then another little drizzle on the top, followed up with a gentle shake or two of flour salt. Ah, you won't believe your taste buds- my mouth is watering now.
